Il nome deriverebbe da Carlo Magno che decise di utilizzarla per curare dalla peste i soldati in seguito ad un sogno.
La tradizione vuole che fosse conosciuta fin dal Medioevo e venisse utilizzata per verificare il tempo: appesa fuori dalle case indicava l’arrivo della pioggia con la chiusura delle brattee.
